Week 9 Blog#8: Active and Passive Learning

During my time as a student, I encountered a lot of passive learning, especially some science subjects, including math, physics, biology, etc. It may be because in China, teachers tend to export knowledge, while students need to listen and absorb knowledge. In Chinese and English classes, active learning is sometimes used. Teachers will ask students to familiarize themselves with the content of the class in advance, and then ask the teacher if they don’t understand.

  • Active learning is a way to cultivate good study habits for yourself, and it is also a way to help you complete your studies better.
  • Passive learning is to transfer the autonomy of attention to an external medium, such as finding some learning videos and books to read.

I think a more efficient learning method is a combination of the two, in simple terms, it can be reading text on the one hand and taking notes on the other. This state means that people have carried out high-intensity output and quick thinking to digest this knowledge.

What is Game-based Learning?

Game-based Learning describes an approach to teaching, where students explore relevant aspect of games in a learning context designed by teachers. The features of game-based learning not only combine learning with gaming make learning more fun, it also:

  • Motivates students to learn
  • Immerses them in the material so they learn more effectively
  • Encourages them to learn from their mistakes

After this week of learning, I think H5P is a good tool to used for learning. Through this personal practice of doing a video created using H5P myself, I found that I could take notes while watching the video and have some interactive multiple choice questions in the video.

This is my first H5P video I made:
